About Me

Prima Dressmaker is a blog established to inspire people of all ages to advance their sewing skills. We will teach you how to understand patterns, construct garments and to sew on a budget. If you love sewing, upcycling clothes, and fashion, then this is the blog for you, regardless of your sewing experience. We post pattern reviews, pattern tutorials, video blogs, sewing technique tutorials and much more!

Sewing is the ultimate hobby which combines style with our need for clothes. We believe everyone can learn to sew their own clothes, no matter your size, gender, ability, or budget.

Who am I?

My name is Melanie, I'm 25-years-young, a vivacious dressmaker and the founder of this blog. I work in the science industry, but dressmaking is my creative outlet. It’s a point of pride for me that I can sew beautiful, high quality garments which you can't buy at your average store. As I sew and write for this blog, I'm also learning to improve my sewing skills too. My partner in crime is my boyfriend Harry, who manages the technical side of blogging.

What is my style?

I love vintage, but I'm no pinup. You'll never see me wearing waist trainers, broaches, or victory rolls. I believe in blending vintage elements into modern, elegant clothing. My style is glamorous and colourful.

How did I start sewing?

I've been exposed to sewing since a young age. My Mum and Grandma made many of my school uniforms, and I hand-sewed simple clothes for my dolls. I became a serious dressmaker in high school when I realized I could sew beautiful clothes cheaply. Sewing became a passion I've followed for the last 10+ years.

Goals in Life?

To have a walk-in-wardrobe of all the things I've made.
To share my sewing designs and ideas with the world.

  1. Hello Melanie, I am watching your wonderful videos from Greencastle, PA, USA.

Thanks for the video on Simplicity pattern 1873. I believe it's the one you are wearing in your home page profile. I made a few, but the bodice is always big. I decided to purchase the Sure-Fit Designs kit which will help me make my own bodice to my unique measurements. I thought this may interest you. Check it out on YouTube to see if it's of interest to you.

I also enjoyed watching your coat tutorial.

I am looking forward to continue watching you for inspiration and techniques.

    Thank you. 😊

    1. Hi Evelyn,

Thanks for commenting! Unfortunately fitting issues are common for patterns even if you have the right size. I recommend that you learn a few tailoring techniques to help with the fitting. Taking in the seams and the darts will go a very long way!

Better yet, try making the bodice first with some cheap fabric to see how it fits and taking it in. Trial and error is a huge part of learning to sew.

I'll definitely check out that company you recommended. All the best for your sewing journey and feel free to drop me an email: primadressmaker@gmail.com
